NYC Guide 5: Exploring Central Park

Central Park, a major feature of the iconography of Manhattan, is of course a must visit while in NYC. Central Park is the backdrop in some of my favourite films and most importantly the wedding spot for soulmates Blair and Chuck (sorry for all the Gossip Girl references, I can’t help myself). It was on the top of my to-do list when I first visited New York in 2016 and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Going back during our last visit was even better, as the park comes alive in the warmer months.

Within the 834 acre urban park, there are a plethora of beautiful sights and things to do. But as the park is immense, it’s a good idea to go in knowing what you want to explore.

Here is my guide on what to do/explore in Central park:
  • After we finished some shopping on Fifth Ave along the Upper East Side and wanted some down time, we headed over to The Pond. This area is quiet and surrounded by benches – the perfect spot for reading.
  • Bethesda Terrace and Fountain Plaza, the setting of Chuck and Blair’s wedding, is one of the most iconic spots in Central Park. The tiling inside the terrace and the fountain are both so beautiful.
  • Walking down the leafy Mall and Literary Walk is an NYC must. There are a lot of street performers along this path, so be careful of taking a photo, as you’ll be harassed for payment if a performer thinks you’re taking a photo of them.
  • During our first visit to Central Park, we decided to go to Central Park Zoo 20 minutes before it closed. Luckily the zoo is small, so we were able to rush through and see all the animals, including grizzly bears which was a first for us. If you’re a Madagascar fan, you should definitely go, just remember that there aren’t zebras, lions, hippos or giraffes at Central Park Zoo IRL.
  • We walked around the stunning Reservoir on our way to the MET. Central Park is so large, but I was still so surprised to see this huge pool of water in the middle of the park.
  • While walking through the park we stumbled across Sheep Meadow, a large lawn, filled with people reading and playing games. We set ourselves down here for a spot of reading and FaceTiming family.
  • My favourite part of Central park is definitely boating in The Lake from the Loeb Boathouse. For $15, we hired a boat for an hour and rowed around The Lake, underneath the famous Bow Bridge and next to the Bethesda Fountain Plaza. Even though we were a sweaty mess rowing in the afternoon in New York’s summer, it was an unforgettable experience.
These were just some of the things I did in Central Park, but the list of activities and sights are endless, you can find more things here: http://www.centralparknyc.org/things-to-see-and-do/

What are some of the things you've done in Central Park or what are some of things you’d love to do if you visited Central Park?

Thanks for reading!
