New York, United State of America, Feb 16'
My uniform in New York: Burberry jacket, Uniqlo thermal turtle neck and jeans
Earlier this year, after our travels on the West Coast of America we hopped on a plane to the crazy, bustling, freezing and amazing New York City. My neighbour on the plane had about 6 mimosas during the flight and man I wished I was of legal drinking age in the US to join her in the celebration of our touch down in NYC.
Just like when I was in Paris, I was very conscious of the fact that I had a very romanticised view of New York. It is the Big Apple where dreams come true and life is amazing, or so I am told from countless rom-coms, Sex and the City and the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite (xoxo gossip girl). While I do believe this city is great and lives up to its expectations, I think more movies need to portray freezing New Yorkers with leaky noses in winter because that was me the entire ten days and the romantic reality.
While I didn't stay on the fabulous Upper East Side - a room in the Palace or Plaza would have been a dream, instead Ivor and I stayed in a gorgeous boutique hotel in midtown called the Evelyn. I think this area is the perfect spot to stay for tourists as it is in the middle of this great city and walkable to places like Flat Iron, Fifth Ave and Times Square.
While it was bitterly cold in this grand city it didn't stop us from going out all night, not in the partying form but the exploring kind, as everything was open until late, the city was still bustling at 1am, oh and also our sleep pattern never left Californian time. I don't think we ever got up before 11am in New York. We would spend the day exploring the endless New Yorkian sites, such as Times Square, the Rockefeller Centre, Byrant Park and the Statue of Liberty, as seen in these photos. And by night we would explore more and frequently caught a show, which included Matilda, Les Miserables and the Late Show with Seth Meyers. One night we went up the blistering cold Empire State Building where the incredible views heavily outweighed my hypothermia.
The Aussie dollar compared to the US dollar was so crap when we were over, but my oh my was the shopping amazing and neither the economy or my leaky nose was going to stop me from exploring and shopping in each major department store. They were so dreamy, from the decor in Saks, the bags in Barneys to the shoe sections of Macys and Bloomingdales - wow, wow and wow. As you can guess, my suitcase was getting very full at this stage.
We stayed in New York for ten days, so stay tuned for another post featuring more photos of our stay.

I want to go to Australia more than I want to visit the USA, but it is interesting to read your perspective! Did you fly via Europe or on the 'back side of Earth' as we Europeans say. I think it might be quicker on the other side, but since I have never done it I am not quite sure...

Ha, your little bit about the romanticized view of NY. I'm from Toronto and one of my pet peeves is seeing movies where they have their jackets open frolicking in the snow...it's way too cold for that!
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Sabrina
Hahah it's way too cold for any unzipped jacket business!!
